Revegetation of the surroundings of Vulkathunha Headquarters at Balcanoona

The operations of a sheep station and drought have left the surroundings of the Headquarters with little remnant vegetation. The Friends have been replanting indigenous vegetation after propagating seedlings using locally collected seed. The new plantings are protected from browsing animals and irrigated for their first years of life. View the progress on the “photopoints” page: Photo-points Read more here ReVeg and here: M&Rstory .

Identification labels have been manufactured (see below) and have been placed next to the growing plants.

Quandong (Urti) seedlings

As well as collecting local seed, propagating seedlings and planting them at Balcanoona, the Weetootla campground, and at Arkaroola Village, the Friends have produced plant labels – see the images at left, right and above. Appearing on the label are: the Adnyamathanha name, the common name and the scientific name. Visitors to Balcanoona can now stroll through the re-vegetation plantings and identify the plants while appreciating the local flora.
