The Flinders Ranges Mogurnda becomes a media star!
In July, 2025, FAME, in partnership with the South Australian Department for Environment and Water, launched a new fish recovery project: “Securing the Flinders Ranges Purple-spotted Gudgeon”. It is one of 11 ‘Bounceback’ projects that DEW and the Foundation for Australia’s Most Endangered Species (FAME) are undertaking in the Flinders, Gawler and Gammon Ranges over three years.
FAME seeks donations to fund projects that work towards halting the rate of extinction in Australia. Now the Flinders Ranges Mogurnda has become a Project (see https://www.fame.org.au/projects )
The FR Mogurnda project aims to:
1 Establish a NEW population of Mogurnda at Wilpena Spring, building resilience against climate impacts (this is in addition to the two 2021 translocations into Yappala IPA and Ikara-Flinders Ranges National Park)
2 Secure and restore habitat across known sites. (This would be in Vulkathunha NP and on Wooltana Station, as well as the translocation sites.)
3 Monitor long-term recovery through science and community partnerships
Although we are not mentioned in the launch, the Friends of Vulkathunha-Gammon Ranges National Park (and DEW) have been monitoring the Fish and publishing scientific articles on our findings since 2017 (see our website: https://friendsofgammons.org.au/publications/ . We also provided some “Friend-power” to DEW to capture fish for the 2021 translocations. And were involved in the 2025 monitoring of the two translocated populations. Now that FAME has adopted the fish as a Bounceback Project, there will be an additional source of funding to secure the fish’s future. Read more at the link below.
